Taipei Shorts: Coffee for Muriel

Exit 11’s contributions to the Taipei Shorts community. Coffee for Muriel is an exploration of love, sacrifice, and the strength of sisterhood. In the shadow of their mother’s terminal illness, two sisters confront their differing visions for their family and the future at 3am. The production premieres at Authentic Playground, Taipei from Jan 12 – 21.

The Bacchae

Escape on an exciting audio adventure. This immersive audio adaptation of Euripedes’ The Bacchae tells a story of madness and freedom, of tyranny and liberation, and of human downfall and divine uprising. Focusing entirely on the audio experience, let your mind dive into the world of The Bacchae. Featuring original music, an immersive soundscape, and dynamic dialogue brought to life through a unique sonic journey.

Vitae

Created through a collaborative process that mirrors that of a dance company, Vitae is an exploration of beginnings and endings; the piece abstractly represents the life of an aspiring artist that follows a piece of red cloth across multiple bodies. The piece is split into three chapters, moving through a journey of birth and exploration, before descending into chaos.

On Our Borders

Composed from interviews with students in New York and Abu Dhabi, On Our Borders is a verbatim performance with original music about Third Culture Kids and the questions their between-culture experiences pose. In a world still catching up with the profound shift in quotidian experience globalization has brought, are we defining identities and communities in ways that further the global circulation of ideas? Is it possible to create a world where everyone can be part of a greater whole? What does it mean to be a global citizen, not fully belonging to any one nation? And is it viable to reconcile our desire for cross-border communities with rising nationalist governments, parties, and policies?

2084

An innovative 21st Century reimagining of George Orwell’s 1984 that takes advantage of the remote environment to create a world where citizens are permanently monitored through video. Devised by a group of ten artists spanning seven countries, the piece explores the usage of different digital mediums in storytelling, including Instagram and Whatsapp in tandem with recorded theatrical performance. It tackles the challenge of creating cohesive spaces in cross-border digital theater-making and continues to push the boundaries of what the online space can offer.

Short+Sweet 2022

Two short plays from Exit 11 artists developed for Short+Sweet Dubai. Ecological drama Waste explores waste culture and climate change through a close-to-home tale about flooding and a local garbage dump. Docu-drama On Edges investigates anxiety, gender, and social pressure in a lyrical interpretation of Olympic skier Janica Kostelic‘s career.
